What is it about Chocolate Mint that is so addicting? The combination of refreshing cool mint and velvety smooth chocolate has been popular since the turn of the century. Ancient Aztecs and Mayans lauded the benefits of chocolate for medicinal purposes. However, the Europeans didn’t care much for the bitter taste, so they added mint and other spices to the chocolate to make it more palatable. Hence, it’s easy to see how chocolate mint became such a treat!
February 19 is National Chocolate Mint Day, so celebrate by making a chocolate mint ice cream ornament. It’s easy and fun! So, grab a bowl of chocolate mint ice cream or a box of Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookies (still the most popular cookie since its introduction in 1953) and celebrate while you craft this DIY ornament that uses minimal supplies.
Chocolate mint not your favorite flavor? That’s OK, you can make any flavor of ice cream cone ornament. Choose any paint colors and embellishments!
Supplies:
Step 1: First, remove the ornament top. Then pour some paint inside the glass ball ornament. Cover the hole with your finger and shake until the paint completely coats the inside. Add more paint as necessary. Let it dry.
Step 2: While the paint is drying, cut a 5 ½” diameter circle out of the brown felt. Note, if you use a different sized glass ball, you will need to adjust your cone size accordingly.
Step 3: Use the scissors to cut a ¼ pie wedge from the felt circle.
Step 4: Fold into a cone shape and then glue both the overlapping inside and outside ends down so you have a cone for your chocolate mint ice cream scoop.
Step 5: Finally, draw sugar cone lines on the felt. Simply draw parallel diagonal lines around the cone in both directions to make an overlapping criss-cross pattern.
Step 6: Cut chocolate mint pieces from the dark brown felt. They do not need to be of any particular shape or all exactly the same, because ice cream pieces are never uniform.
Step 7: Next, carefully glue the chocolate mint pieces to the exterior of the glass ball ornament, spacing them out a bit. Let them dry.
Step 8: Make a ring of glue around the inside edge of the felt cone and set the bottom of the glass ball ornament inside. Press to make sure that the glue sticks to the glass ball and let it dry.
Step 9: Replace the ornament cap on the top. Then cut a ribbon and tie to the cap of the ornament for hanging.
That’s it! Your chocolate mint ice cream cone ornament looks good enough to eat! This DIY ornament makes a great activity for a birthday party, because children can choose their favorite flavors to make!
