It’s the fall season and time to make Bird Seed Ornaments! As the weather turns colder and there is a chill in the air, I love watching the birds gather their last worms before the ground becomes to hard to access. In order to keep birds flocking to our home, I thought of making bird seed ornaments that are good for the birds as they head into winter.
Bird seed ornaments are easy to make in your kitchen and are fun for kids to enjoy. Once the hungry birds have gobbled these up, you can always make another batch. Or, alternatively, you can freeze and thaw them for the dead of winter months that lie ahead.
Making bird seed ornaments is a lot like baking up a treat in your kitchen. Kids love creating bird seed ornaments in many shapes by using different cookie cutters. We made a star shape, but have also enjoyed making Christmas holiday shapes such as gingerbread men, Christmas trees, mittens and snowmen. Hang them on tree branches and watch as the birds flock to your home this holiday season.
Supplies:
Step 1: First, combine the flour, gelatin, and water in a mixing bowl and stir to form a paste.
Step 2: Then add in the bird seed and mix until coated with the paste.
Step 3: Melt the lard in the microwave and add it to the bird seed. Now mix in the corn syrup until the bird seed holds together like a dough.
Step 4: Carefully cover a small cookie sheet with foil. Then coat the cookie cutter lightly with the cooking spray, and set on the cookie sheet. Finally, press some of the bird seed mixture into the cookie cutter and fill the shape.
Step 5: Now, cut the plastic straw in pieces, approximately 1” in length. Then stick a straw piece into the top of the pressed mixture and let it sit for 3 to 4 hours to dry.
Step 6: Once dry, transfer to a piece of foil and place in the freezer overnight. Then after you take it out of the freezer, pop the bird seed ornaments out from the cookie cutter.
Step 7: We’re almost done! Remove the piece of straw from the bird seed ornament. Now cut a strand of twine, feed it through the hole and tie a knot at the top.
That’s it! Now you have made bird seed ornaments that are perfect for your feathered friends. A batch of these bird seed ornaments can last throughout the winter to help feed the birds in your backyard. Make bird seed ornaments to give as gifts to friends so they can feed the birds in their backyard too. Or, bring some to your next Thanksgiving dinner and pass out to family and friends to hang on a tree when they go home. They will appreciate this unique ornament gift as they watch how happy the birds are eating them!
