Garden Gnomes are a popular backyard decoration, so it’s a really big deal when some of them go missing! It then falls to Gnomeo and Juliet, who call upon the expert Sherlock Gnomes to pick up the trail of the missing gnomes in the new movie Sherlock Gnomes, debuting in theaters on March 23rd.
To celebrate the Sherlock Gnomes movie release, we crafted these two garden gnomes characters from the movie! They are made from glass ball ornaments and are decorated with some felt and paint so you can easily make these at home. A fun DIY for you and your family to do together, and then after you are finished, you can all go see the real characters in action at the movies!
Here, we will show you how to make garden gnomes Gnomeo and Juliet. However, don’t forget to make some of the other memorable characters from the Sherlock Gnomes movie, such as Mankini, Paris and Benny. So fun to make the entire collection!
Supplies:
• Frosted glass ball ornament 2 5/8” diameter (one for each gnome you want to make)
• Red and Blue felt
• Scissors
• Glue
• Pale pink and brown paints
• Pipe cleaner
• Cotton
• Paint markers
• Ribbon
Step 1: Remove the ornament cap and then pour pink paint into the glass ball ornament. It is important to cover the ornament hole with your thumb, and then shake the ornament until the paint completely coats the inside of the glass. Shake out any remaining paint and let it dry.
Step 2: Next, cut a 3” square from each color of the felt. Then, trim the two top corners off.
Step 3: Now you can cut a 2” piece of pipe cleaner and glue it to the top of the piece of felt, making sure that it goes to the edge in between the two cut corners.
Step 4: Next, run a line of glue along the bottom of the piece of felt and secure to the glass ball ornament. Remember to put the ornament cap back on!
Step 5: Using more glue, wrap the ends of the felt until they are overlapping and come to a point at the top. This will create the pointy top on the hats of your garden gnomes. The pipe cleaner is on the inside and should be sticking straight up in the air.
Note: Leave yourself access to the ornament cap to tie a ribbon for hanging later!
Step 6: Now that you have your garden gnomes ready, it’s time to make their faces. Draw them on using the paint markers and let them dry.
Step 7: Take a paintbrush and then using the brown paint, add hair along the perimeter of the gnome hat. The male gnomes in the movie all have a beard, so trim a piece of cotton and glue to the glass ball.
Step 8: Now it’s time to add your finishing touches! In order to make the hat less pointy, like the characters in the movie, carefully bend the pipe cleaners to make a bend in your gnome’s hat. Then, cut a piece of ribbon and tie to the top of the ornament cap for hanging.
That’s it! Get an ornament stand and then your gnomes ornaments will be ready for hanging or displaying.
